  • Doctor degree in Physical Sciences. Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain. 1988-1992. Ph.D. Thesis : Study of Energy and Particle Fluxes at the Plasma Edge of the JET Tokamak.

Professional Experience

  • 1988 – 1989. Ph. D. Student at the Department of Atomic and Nuclear Physics (Universidad Complutense de Madrid) and the Joint European Torus – Electron Temperature Group.  Fellowship from the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science.
  • 1990 – 1992. Ph. D. Student at the Joint European Torus – Plasma Boundary Group. Fellowship from the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science followed by Fellowship from the European Commission.
  • 1992 – 1994. Postdoctoral researcher at the Joint European Torus – Plasma Boundary Group. Fellowship from the European Commission.1994 – 1997. Researcher at the Joint European Torus – Plasma Boundary Group.
  • 1997 – 2007. European Commission Scientific Officer (Directorate General for Research and Development) at the European Fusion Development Agreement – Close Support Unit (NET-Team, until 1999), Plasma Physics Group. Responsible for the EFDA Technology Programme in the area of plasma-wall interactions for ITER (from 2002).
  • 2008 – 2012. European Commission Scientific Officer (Directorate General for Research and Development) assigned to the ITER Organization. Senior Scientific Officer of the Transport and Confinement Physics Area at the ITER Plasma Operation Directorate.
  • 2012 – present. European Commission Scientific Officer (Directorate General for Research and Development) seconded to the ITER Organization. Leader of the Plasma Confinement and Modelling Section at the ITER Plasma Operation Directorate.
  • 2009 – present. Secretary of the ITER Council Science and Technology Advisory Committee.
  • 2004 – present. Fellow of the United Kingdom Institute of Physics.
  • 2005 – present. Guest-Professor at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (Spain). Teaching of courses at PhD level on plasma-wall interactions and fusion reactor physics.

  • Author/Co-author of more than 200 scientific papers in international journals with referee, (27 as first author of which 2 are review papers and one is a chapter of a book). H-index 36.
  • Author/Co-author of more than 100 contributions to international conferences and workshops, of which 15 are invited talks as first author.

  • Plasma Edge Physics in Controlled Fusion Devices: Pedestal Plasma Physics, Edge Localised Modes, Plasma Fuelling and Density Control.
  • Plasma-Wall Interactions in Controlled Fusion Devices : Edge Particle and Power Flows in Fusion Reactors, Plasma-Material Interactions in Reactor-like Conditions during Stationary Phases and Transients.
  • Physics of Transient Loads in Controlled Fusion Devices and their Control: Particle and Power Flows to PFCs during ELMs and Disruptions, Control of ELM Loads in Fusion Reactors (by Pellets, 3-D fields, etc.), Runaway Electron Formation, Confinement and Loss Physics.
  • Physics of Energy and Particle Transport in Magnetic Confinement Fusion Plasmas.
